These areas include media audiences, economics, law and policy, regulation, news, management, aesthetics, social effects, history, and criticism, among others. BEA is concerned with electronic media curricula, placing an emphasis on interactions among the purposes, developments, and practices of the industry and imparting this information to future professionals. BEA serves as a forum for exposition, analysis and debate of issues of social importance to develop members’ awareness and sensitivity to these issues and to their ramifications, which will ultimately help students develop as more thoughtful practitioners.

The Chemistry Club has been in existence since 1972. The chemistry club at SMSU strives to maintain an active chapter in a variety of ways. One of our primary activities is outreach with area K-12 schools. We love sharing our enthusiasm for science and trying to inspire future scientists. We do this in part by performing demonstration shows and making by liquid nitrogen ice cream. We do on-campus shows for specific school groups, with hands-on activities when possible. We also take our show on the road and travel to area schools for demonstration shows and hands-on activities. Additionally, we participate in the SMSU Homecoming Parade, attend ACS-sponsored webinars, visit graduate programs of universities in our region, invite area chemists and alumni to speak, and attend ACS Meetings. We try to keep our activities fun and interesting and continually try to recruit new club members from our existing and incoming student population. We hope they love sharing and doing chemistry as much as we do!

The SMSU Chorale is the university's elite, mixed choral ensemble. The ensemble specializes in the performance of a wide range of sacred and secular choral literature of all historical periods, voicings, and nationalities. Repertoire includes unaccompanied works for a cappella choir as well as works performed with professional instrumental ensembles. The SMSU Chorale is open to all students, regardless of major, by audition. Students who are interested in participating should enroll in MUS 355.

The club is here to create a sense of community for creative and open-minded individuals. As well as expand the ability to think creatively and critically in theoretical situations. All while teaching how to play and give a further understanding of Dungeons and Dragons.

Each week we have sessions available for people to join. If you are interested in more of our community we have fundraisers, discussions, and simple introductions into different parts of the D&D community. Each week is an adventure, and we would love for you to join us.

What is Enactus?
Enactus is an international student organization with teams at more than 1700 colleges and universities in 33 countries. The goal of Enactus teams all over the world is to “change the world” by engaging in projects that improve their communities and the lives of people all across the globe. Enactus team members implement programs that create real economic opportunities for members of their communities. The effectiveness of their programs is judged at competition. Each national Enactus organization conducts a national competition, which is judged by leaders from its business community. Our Enactus team is a very competitive organization. We have advanced to the national competition each year since 2001, and our team was ranked one of the top 8 teams in the nation multiple years in a row.

The SMSU Theatre Program provides students from any major the opportunity to participate in theatre productions as an extracurricular activity and also offers academic and co-curricular opportunities through the Theatre major, minors, and classes.

Students from any major can participate in SMSU Theatre productions as an extracurricular activity. The Theatre Program also offers a major, 3 minors, and classes in all areas of theatre. Classes are open to all students.

The Theatre Program produces 3-4 plays and musicals each year in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre and the Black Box Theatre (FA 112). Auditions for SMSU Theatre productions are open to all students and community members.
Every year, the SMSU Theatre Program takes students to the Region 5 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, a celebration of college and university theatre in the upper Midwest. Students take part in acting, directing, design and technical competitions, attend workshops, and see shows from other universities during this weeklong festival. SMSU students and productions have received awards and recognition at the festival. Other Theatre trips include a Spring Break New York theatre tour and a London theatre tour in alternating years.

SMSU students also take part in and run the Drama Club. Two productions each year are directed, performed, designed, and sometimes written, by students. Drama Club is open to all SMSU students. Drama Club meets every Tuesday at noon in the Black Box (FA 112).

The Mustang Pep Band is a high energy performance ensemble that enhances the game day environment for Football Games and Men's and Women's Basketball Games at SMSU. Most students participate in both the Spring and Fall, although this is not a requirement. The band plays arrangements of some of the most driving popular music selections from the past 4 decades in order to provide entertainment to the widest possible audience. Members of the Mustang Pep Band come from many degree programs throughout the university. All full-time, student members of the Mustang Pep Band receive a $200 scholarship for the fall semester, and $100 for the spring semester of participation

The previously offered Star of Minnesota Marching Band was changed to a primarily Pep Band format due to budget constraints. However, this group will still march one show in the fall for the Homecoming game and for the Pursuit of Excellence festival which is co-hosted by the SMSU bands and the Marshall High School Music Boosters.

The Speech Team (previously "Forensics") is a student supported co-curricular activity that is open to all students who are enrolled at SMSU. The budget of the program is funded jointly through the administration and student activity fees. Cost of involvement to the individual student is minimal. The Student Association is composed of every student enrolled for classes at Southwest Minnesota State University. Along with other collective bargaining groups, the Student Association strives to improve life for SMSU Students. The Student Association has been recognized by the University and by the MnSCU Board as the primary student government group at Southwest Minnesota State University. Elected representatives of the student body serve as the members of the Student Senate and as officers for the Student Association, as composed in five areas.

The Symphonic Chamber Winds and the Concert Band are the
concert ensembles for winds and percussion. The Symphonic Chamber Winds is and auditioned group that meets in the spring. The Concert Band is open to all students each semester.
The Symphonic Chamber Winds is SMSU's premiere concert ensemble for winds and percussion. Members include music majors as well as outstanding musicians from degree programs throughout the university. The Symphonic Band plays the highest quality literature available for bands and chamber ensembles in a variety of styles and difficulty levels. Students must successfully audition for this ensemble each year. Auditions are held during the fall semester, and are publicized on SMSU Today and with posters.
The SMSU/Community Concert Band is open to all SMSU students and community musicians looking for the opportunity to perform on wind and percussion instruments. No audition is required. This group meets on Thursday nights from 7:00 to 9:20 p.m. and performs 1 to 2 times each semester. The Concert Band performs the finest literature written for larger wind bands including standards of the repertoire as well as new literature in varying styles and formats.
The SMSU Bands encourage the development of new wind band literature through commissioning efforts. Recent participation in commissioning consortia have resulted in the writing of Star Crossed by Andrew Boysen (2013); Streets of Honor by Daniel Kallman (2006); and KRUMP by Scott McAllister (2007). The bands at SMSU travel regularly. Destinations have included: Beijing & Shanghai, China (2008); London, England (2006); the Carribean (2004); Washington D.C. (2001); and Australian (2000).

Music is social activity that can be enjoyed throughout one's life. The SMSU/Community Concert Band is designed with this idea in mind. Musicians young and old will benefit from sharing their skills, experiences, and love of music with one another. The SMSU/Community Concert Band is open to any SMSU student as well as community members and high school students from Marshall and the surrounding communities. The Concert Band rehearses from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

3. As a result of membership in the USA individuals will receive an increased respect for the purpose behind the Second Amendment as well as an increased respect for firearms safety and their applications.
4. As a result of its presence on campus, the USA will be a potential asset to the University in the areas of student recruiting, retention, and public relations.

The Vocal Ensemble consists of two performing groups: the SMSU Glee Club and Alta Voce. The groups have been recognized with high regard in the United States and abroad.

Each ensemble functions differently with varied purposes of nurturing educational, cultural and artistic needs of the students, in addition to preserving historically and culturally unique music.

The SMSU Glee Club is an exciting and dynamic choral ensemble that focuses on music for low voices. Open to all male-identifying and non-binary singers with tenor, baritone or bass voices in the Marshall area, by audition, the SMSU Glee Club performs music from wide ranging and varied repertoire. Students who are interested in participating should enroll in MUS 352, section 01.

Alta Voce is Southwest Minnesota’s premier choir for soprano and alto voices. Membership is open to all female-identifying and non-binary students and members of the Marshall community with soprano, mezzo-soprano, or alto voices, by audition. Alta Voice performs music from a wide ranging and varied repertoire. Students who are interested in participating should enroll in MUS 352, section 02.

SMSU Women's RFC is established for the purpose of developing leadership skills and awareness of the rules and regulations in which the sport of rugby is played. The club will provide its members with an opportunity for social interaction, fun and leadership growth. It will bring to the college and the community a chance to learn more about a tradition rich and fast growing. We compete in National Collegiate Rugby's Prairie States Conference Division III and have two seasons, Fall XVs and Spring 7s. Practices are Mon, Wed, Fri from 6:30-8pm.
